Fire Announcement

The Morton Township Board and community are saddened by the devastating fire that rampaged through one of our local businesses, Blue Lake Tavern on March 30, 2021.  We are most thankful that nobody was injured by this fire. Chief Sutherby and the brave men and women of the Morton Township Fire Rescue were first on the scene around 5:15 PM on March 30th and the last to leave the scene when the final flames were put out around 8:00 AM on March 31st, approximately fifteen hours battling this raging fire. Throughout the night we were supported by the following area fire departments: Wheatland Township, Barryton Fire, Big Prairie Fire, Colfax Township, Morley Fire, Mecosta Township, Lakeview Fire, Chippewa-Martiny Fire, Nottawa-Sherman, Millbrook-Rolland, as well as Mecosta County EMS, Mecosta County Sheriffs Posse, Central Dispatch and Mecosta County Emergency Services.  We are forever grateful for the men and women from these departments and agencies answering the call to assist us in battle.

Our amazing community stepped up when asked as well.  Hixson’s Family Market, CL Pizza and Lakeside Pizza and Grinders teamed up and provided twenty-eight pizzas free of charge to feed the frontline workers during this time.  Conley’s Bakery donated some of their great doughnuts as well.  Not to mention the numerous individuals that brought food and goodies to the scene. Thank you all for your generosity! An additional thanks to Morningstar Excavating for such a quick response to assist with sand and machinery that was needed in our efforts.

One of the great things about a small town is watching a community come together and rise above adversity. It is reassuring to know that the residents of Morton Township will do exactly this. Our hearts go out to the owners of the Blue Lake Tavern and to all the employees affected by this tragic event. On behalf of the Morton Township Board, Morton Township Fire/Rescue and the community I want to thank everybody for their efforts and donations last night, and in the days to come. Each one of you are what makes this such an amazing place to call home!

Sincerely,

Mark R Klumpp, Morton Township Supervisor
